Ask most amateur cyclists what stands between them and the pros, and you’ll get an answer in watts. A higher Functional Threshold Power (FTP), a better power-to-weight ratio, a few more numbers on the right side of the ledger. And it’s true that the fittest riders in the world are, well, extraordinarily fit.
But fitness is the price of entry, not what wins races. If you put a strong amateur and a world-class pro on a trainer for a fresh, five-minute test, the gap would be real, but it would be smaller than you’d expect, and it would tell you almost nothing about what happens when the two of them actually race. The decisive differences show up where your FTP test can’t see: deep into a hard day, in the choices made under fatigue, in the hours spent off the bike.
Here are five of those differences and, more importantly, what you can do about each one.
1. Pros train for durability, not peak power
Your FTP describes what you can do when you’re fresh. The problem is that races are never decided when you’re fresh.
The concept that’s reshaped how coaches think about performance is durability: the ability to hold your power numbers after you’ve already burned through thousands of kilojoules (kJs).
A pro and an amateur might have surprisingly similar power profiles in the first hour. Ask them both to produce a hard, sustained effort after 3,000+ kJs of accumulated work, though, and the gap yawns open. The amateur’s “FTP” has dropped by 15-20%. The pro’s has barely moved. That decay is often a better predictor of race results than an impressive fresh number.
This matters because most amateurs train and test power in the wrong way. They do their intervals early in a ride when they’re fresh, they test on rested legs, and they conclude they’re stronger than their racing suggests.
Then hour four arrives and the truth comes out.
What to do about it:
- Move key efforts to the back of long rides. Do your threshold or VO2 work after 2.5 to three hours of endurance riding, not at the start. It’s harder and less satisfying, and that’s the point.
- Test durability directly. Repeat a short benchmark effort (say, five minutes) early in a ride and again after a big chunk of kilojoules. The percentage drop is your durability score. Track it over a season.
- Don’t only chase a bigger fresh FTP. A rider who holds 95% of their FTP at hour four will beat a rider with a higher fresh FTP who fades to 80%.
2. Pros focus on consistency over heroics
The most important training principle in the sport is also the most boring: the athletes who improve are the ones who don’t stop.
Amateurs tend to train in bursts—a huge block when motivation is high, followed by a crash from illness, injury, burnout, or life. The fitness they built leaks away during the gap, and they spend the next block climbing back to where they already were. Pros aren’t necessarily training harder on their best days; they’re training uninterrupted across months and years. That unbroken accumulation is what long-term Fitness (your CTL) is really measuring: not how hard you went last Tuesday, but whether you kept showing up.
The uncomfortable implication is that your hardest sessions are rarely the ones that make you. It’s the unremarkable, repeatable ones you can string together for 40 weeks without breaking.
Heroic single workouts feel like progress but often cause the very gap that erases it.
What to do about it:
- Judge a training week by whether you could repeat it next week and the week after. If you can’t, it was probably too much.
- Watch your long-term Fitness trend, not individual sessions. Steady, gradual increases in CTL beat spikes followed by forced time off.
- Treat the avoidance of gaps as a training goal in itself. Backing off when you’re run-down isn’t weakness, it’s protecting the consistency that actually drives adaptation.
- Ramp gradually. Rapid jumps in training load are the fastest route to the injury or illness that ends a block.

3. Pros take recovery seriously
Elite riders will tell you the hard part of their job isn’t the four hours on the bike—it’s the 20 hours off it. Training is only a stimulus. You don’t actually get faster during the ride. You get faster while recovering from it. If the recovery doesn’t happen, the training doesn’t count.
This is where amateurs give away the most, because recovery is the part of the process that competes directly with normal life. They sacrifice sleep to a work deadline. They skip fueling after a hard session because dinner isn’t for three hours. Life stress, which the body processes as physiological load indistinguishable from training load, stacks on top of an already tired system.
The pro isn’t more disciplined on the bike than a committed amateur. They just protect recovery with the seriousness most people reserve for the workout itself.
The good news: recovery is a skill, which means it responds to attention and practice.
What to do about it:
- Treat sleep as your single most important recovery tool. Keeping consistent sleep and wake times, and protecting total hours, will do more than any supplement or gadget.
- Fuel immediately after hard sessions rather than waiting for the next scheduled meal. Carbohydrate and protein intake soon after a key workout accelerates the repair you actually trained for.
- Account for life stress in your training decisions. Layering a big training block on top of a brutal week at work isn’t tough; it’s a recipe for the gap we talked about in section two.
- Use your subjective and objective signals—morning readiness, resting heart rate, HRV if you track it, fatigue—to decide when to push and when to back off.

4. Pros nail down in-race fueling
Few things in cycling have changed as fast, or as dramatically, as how much the best riders eat while racing. The old wisdom held that the gut could only absorb around 60 grams of carbs per hour, so that’s what riders targeted. Then athletes started training the gut to tolerate far more, and the ceiling moved to 90, 100, even 120 grams per hour on the hardest days.
This isn’t a marginal tweak. It’s the difference between arriving at the decisive moment of a race with a full tank or a fading one. A rider consuming 100+ grams of carbohydrates per hour can hold high power deep into an event. Fueling and durability aren’t separate topics; carbohydrate availability helps a rider hold their numbers at hour four.
This is where amateurs may have the most immediate room to improve, because most are still riding on far too little—a gel here, half a bar there—well under half of what the effort demands. They then blame their legs or their fitness for a fade that was really just an empty tank.
What to do about it:
- Know your actual intake. Add up the grams of carbohydrate you consume per hour on a hard ride. Most amateurs are shocked to find they’re at 30-40g when the effort calls for far more.
- Build up gradually. The gut adapts like any other system. Don’t jump from 40g to 100g overnight. Increase your hourly intake over weeks.
- Practice race fueling in training. Your race-day nutrition plan should be something you’ve rehearsed dozens of times, not something you try for the first time on the start line.
- Match intake to demand. Easy endurance rides don’t require 100g/hour. Reserve the high numbers for long, hard days when you need to defend your power late.
5. Pros know when to preserve their energy
Take two riders with identical FTPs and put them in the same race. One finishes with the front group; the other is minutes back, cooked. Their fitness was equal. What differed was how they spent it.
Amateurs tend to ride reactively and emotionally. They surge over every little rise, close every gap the instant it opens, and answer every acceleration as though each one is the deciding move. Every one of those efforts spends a match, and the supply of matches is finite. By the time the moment that actually matters arrives, the reactive rider has nothing left to answer with.
Pros refuse to spend on efforts that don’t change the outcome, so the energy is still there when it counts.
This is a skill, not a fitness number, and it’s one of the clearest dividers between riders of similar physical ability. Knowing when not to spend is as important as being able to spend hard when you choose to.
What to do about it:
- Pace from the start with the finish in mind. On a long climb or a time trial, going out even slightly too hard early costs you disproportionately at the end.
- Learn to sit in. Every meter spent in the draft is energy banked. Fight the urge to ride at the front where it feels heroic and costs the most.
- Audit your surges. Review a race file and look at your spikes above threshold. Ask of each one: Did that effort change my race, or did I just spend a match on reflex?
- Smooth the terrain. Let your power drift down slightly over short rises and recover on the way over, rather than hammering to hold a constant speed. Even pacing of effort usually beats even pacing of speed.
How to start closing the divide
None of this replaces fitness—you still have to build the engine. But once you’re fit enough to be in the conversation, the podium is decided by everything around the engine: how well your power survives fatigue, how consistently you’ve trained to build it, how seriously you recover, how much you fuel, and how wisely you spend what you’ve got.
The encouraging news is that not one of these requires more talent. They require attention. And unlike a genetic ceiling on your VO2 max, every one of them is fully within your control, starting with your next ride.
Pick one to work on this week. Durability and fueling tend to offer the fastest, most noticeable returns for riders who’ve never deliberately trained them. Master one, then move to the next. That, more than any single heroic workout, is how you close the gap.
