The budget Unbound tune-up
Gravel Locos is a multi-distance gravel event based in Hico, Texas, on the northern edge of Hill Country. Routes use smooth, fast limestone gravel, open ranch roads, pavement connectors, repeated rollers, occasional chunky patches, and water crossings. Late-May sun and limited shade make heat management, pacing, and hydration central to the day.
For riders who can train about 5–7¾ hours in each non-race week, this 12-week plan gives each ride a clear purpose. Steady work, short climbs, pacing, and drinking practice are combined within focused sessions, while selected rides finish on rolling terrain to prepare for effort after fatigue without requiring frequent all-day training.
INSIDE THE TIME-CRUNCHED PLAN — 5–7¾ HR/TRAINING WK
Includes zone-tailored structured rides for your devices, built-in strength with video walkthroughs, heat-training protocols for racing in the hot stuff, peloton skills workouts, weekly coach notes + the Gravel Grit mental program, and nutrition and hydration guidance.

The Complete Gravel Locos Guide — the training, the tactics, the gear and race day, explained simply and clearly: what to do, when to do it, and why it works.

Hey, I'm Matti. I spent 11 years at TrainingPeaks, where they trusted me to teach coaches how to coach at TrainingPeaks University. I raced Amateur Elite with Rio Grande Cycling Team and podiumed my age group at Unbound 200 in 2026. I have a degree in biology and exercise physiology from St. Olaf. I'm also a middle-aged dad of three, so I know training doesn't happen in a vacuum. I help gravel riders get stupidly fast without becoming the person who brings a food scale to a party
