The budget Unbound tune-up
Gravel Locos is a multi-distance gravel event based in Hico, Texas, on the northern edge of Hill Country. Routes use smooth, fast limestone gravel, open ranch roads, pavement connectors, repeated rollers, occasional chunky patches, and water crossings. Late-May sun and limited shade make heat management, pacing, and hydration central to the day.
For riders seeking a result, 9–13 hours per week build speed that remains usable across fast gravel, short climbs, and repeated rollers. Key sessions combine steady riding with later changes of pace, while longer rides practice drinking before thirst and holding position without wasting effort in the heat.

Hey, I'm Matti. I spent 11 years at TrainingPeaks, where they trusted me to teach coaches how to coach at TrainingPeaks University. I raced Amateur Elite with Rio Grande Cycling Team and podiumed my age group at Unbound 200 in 2026. I have a degree in biology and exercise physiology from St. Olaf. I'm also a middle-aged dad of three, so I know training doesn't happen in a vacuum. I help gravel riders get stupidly fast without becoming the person who brings a food scale to a party
