Balanced Durability, Phase 2: Build
Extend the base and add a long day.
Balanced Durability keeps the pounding low by splitting your volume across run and bike, and Phase 2 is where that volume starts to grow. You hold your frequency, stretch your session lengths, and add a back-to-back aerobic weekend, letting the bike take the bigger load so your legs stay fresh enough to keep running often.
Everything here stays aerobic: longer, never faster. This is the phase that moves you from "consistent" to genuinely fit, without the injury risk that comes from piling it all onto the run. Already reasonably fit? This is your natural starting block.
This is Phase 2 of a 3-part Balanced Durability set. Each phase is a 4-week block. It follows Phase 1, or serves as an entry point for fitter athletes. Stack it into Phase 3, or connect all three for up to 12 weeks of base before your season's quality training begins.
👋 Hey, I'm Patrick McCrann, head coach at Endurance Nation. I've been coaching endurance athletes for 20+ years, and I race the same stuff you do: 30 Ironman finishes, a Big Buckle at Leadville, 5 BQs and a top 10 at Unbound 200. EN has helped 1000s of age-group athletes get faster with the time they actually have. Whether you're following one of our training plans or working with me directly, the approach is the same: smart structure, no junk miles, and coaching that respects your life.
