Balanced Durability, Phase 1: Foundation
The friendlier way to start your season strong.
Balanced Durability builds the same frequency-first foundation as our Run Durability set, but it shares the load across run and bike. That means less pounding, lower injury risk, and a more forgiving on-ramp back into training, which makes it the ideal starting point if you are returning from a break, newer to consistent volume, or simply want to protect your legs while you rebuild.
Phase 1 establishes easy, frequent training across both sports: short aerobic runs and rides that build the habit and the base without chasing fitness yet. Nothing is hard, everything is repeatable, and the bike carries volume your legs do not have to absorb on foot. Beginners and returning athletes start here.
This is Phase 1 of a 3-part Balanced Durability set. Each phase is a 4-week block. Run this one on its own, or stack Phases 1, 2, and 3 for up to 12 weeks (a full three months) of base before your season's quality training begins.
👋 Hey, I'm Patrick McCrann, head coach at Endurance Nation. I've been coaching endurance athletes for 20+ years, and I race the same stuff you do: 30 Ironman finishes, a Big Buckle at Leadville, 5 BQs and a top 10 at Unbound 200. EN has helped 1000s of age-group athletes get faster with the time they actually have. Whether you're following one of our training plans or working with me directly, the approach is the same: smart structure, no junk miles, and coaching that respects your life.
