Conquer Your First Olympic Triathlon... Without Sacrificing Your Schedule!
Are you a busy professional, parent, or everyday athlete ready to cross your first short-course finish line with confidence? Written by a busy professional, USAT Coach, and active dad, this 16-week blueprint is mathematically built to optimize your limited training hours so you can show up to race day strong, fit, and injury-free.
Plan Highlights:
Duration: 16 Weeks
Time Commitment: 4 to 7 hours per week (perfect for tight schedules)
Weekly Layout: 5–6 structured sessions per week with 2 dedicated recovery days (one optional for cross-training)
Workout Length: Sessions start at an achievable 30 minutes and build progressively up to a peak of ~120 minutes for the longest weekend endurance blocks.
Is This Plan Right For You?
This plan is designed for the beginner triathlete stepping up to the Olympic distance (1.5k swim, 24-25 mile bike, 6.2 mile run). Before starting week 1, you should comfortably be able to swim, bike, and run/jog continuously for roughly 30 minutes at an easy pace.
How the Heart Rate Structure Works:
This plan uses precise, personalized intensity zones based on your Lactate Threshold Heart Rate (LTHR). Training with LTHR ensures you are never wasting time training too hard or too easy. To unlock the full power of this plan, you will need a heart rate monitor and your LTHR baseline, which can be found in one of two ways:
Option 1: The 30-Minute Field Test (Highly Recommended)
Find a flat road or track. After a thorough 10-minute warm-up, perform a 30-minute solo time trial effort (running at the hardest sustained pace you can maintain for the full 30 minutes). Press the "Lap" button on your watch exactly 10 minutes into the test. Your average heart rate over the final 20 minutes of that test is your LTHR.
Option 2: The Age-Based Estimate
Calculate your estimated Maximum Heart Rate using the standard formula: MaxHR = 207 - (0.7 x age). Multiply that final number by 86% to find your estimated LTHR baseline (LTHR = MaxHR x 0.86).
Once you have your number, simply input it into your TrainingPeaks settings to automatically generate your personalized zones (Step-by-step guide: https://help.trainingpeaks.com/hc/en-us/articles/204073584-How-To-Set-Thresholds-And-Calculate-TrainingPeaks-Zones).
Fully Compatible with Your Devices:
Every workout in this plan is built using TrainingPeaks' Structured Workout format. This means you can seamlessly export these sessions directly to your Garmin, Wahoo, Apple Watch, or other compatible devices. Your watch will guide you through every interval, transition, and intensity target in real time (More info on device setup: https://help.trainingpeaks.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000325647-Structured-Workout-Export).
Coach Support Included:
Just because this is a downloadable plan doesn't mean you're on your own. If you hit a roadblock, have a question about a specific workout, or need clarification, you have direct email access to me throughout the 16 weeks.
Enjoy the journey, train smarter, and see you at the finish line!
