Knowing what to do each week can make your first Full Distance Triathlon feel much more achievable. This 36-week Beginner triathlon training plan gives you a gradual route toward Mossel Bay, South Africa, starting with manageable training hours before building into the longer sessions your race will require.
Picture the day ahead: a 3.8 km sea swim, a 180 km bike ride and a 42.2 km marathon along South Africa’s Garden Route. Santos Beach and the De Bakke resort area provide the setting for the swim start and finish line. The bike follows open roads and rolling coastal terrain, then the run takes you through Mossel Bay’s coastal and town surroundings. You’ll need endurance across all three sports and practice moving from one to the next.
Your first milestone is a stronger foundation.
The opening 12 weeks begin at 4.5 hours of training per week, reaching six hours by week 11. Video tutorials explain swimming drills step by step, helping you understand what to practice and improve your confidence in the water. This phase gives you time to establish a training routine before longer sessions become a regular part of your week. A challenging brick session in week 12 brings disciplines together and introduces the feeling of continuing when your legs are already tired.
From there, you have 24 weeks to prepare for the race.
This phase starts at 7.5 hours per week and builds to approximately 14.5 hours. Open-water swimming helps you gain experience outside the pool for Mossel Bay’s sea swim. Tempo runs develop your ability to hold a controlled effort, while progressive bricks let you practice combining disciplines rather than always training them separately.
For a beginner, that practice matters. The marathon comes after a long swim and ride, so learning how you respond to accumulated fatigue helps you make better pacing decisions. Use your longer sessions to rehearse an effort you can sustain, especially when the bike terrain changes.
Included with your plan are three race-readiness calculators to support those decisions. Use the Race Predictor Calculator to estimate performance, the Race Pace Strategy Calculator to organize swim, bike and run execution, and the Triathlon Fueling Calculator to build your fueling approach. Practice your pacing and nutrition in training so you arrive with experience behind your race strategy.
Choose this 36-week Beginner Full Distance Triathlon training plan and begin preparing for Mossel Bay one manageable week at a time.
