This 24-week Long Distance Triathlon Training Plan is purpose-built to prepare Senior Triathletes 60+ for the unique demands of the Jacksonville Long Distance Triathlon — a race defined by a fast downriver swim, a lightning-quick flat bike course, and a dynamic, scenic marathon through the city’s heart. Designed around science-based progression, heart-rate precision, and senior-specific conditioning, it gives you the tools to perform confidently from start to finish.

🏊‍♂️ Swim Preparedness – Power & Efficiency Downriver

The plan’s technique-driven swim sessions emphasize form under fatigue, bilateral breathing, and controlled pacing — ideal for mastering the 2.4-mile St. Johns River point-to-point current. Integrated open-water drills mimic sighting, drafting, and stroke control in moving water so you glide efficiently with the current while conserving energy for the long day ahead.

🚴 Bike Conditioning – Strength for Speed & Stability

Jacksonville’s 112-mile flat and fast bike course demands sustained aerobic output and muscular endurance. Progressive Zone 2/3 rides and VO₂ max intervals develop the ability to hold steady power over hours of pedaling. Core-stability and strength workouts build resilience against posture fatigue, while long tempo rides simulate the nonstop rhythm of city roads and crosswinds along the riverfront.

The two-loop, 26.2-mile run through Jacksonville’s bridges and boroughs requires controlled pacing and mental composure. This plan integrates brick workouts, cadence drills, and neuromuscular sessions to maintain form when fatigued. Gradual mileage builds, recovery-optimized structure, and mobility work safeguard joints and promote longevity — perfect for experienced senior triathletes.
