This 12 week plan is designed to plug the gap between now and the start of your primary training plan. It is low volume and low intensity, with a focus on strength training. We still include one high intensity session each week, but this training plan is designed to be sustainable and very manageable, rather than pushing you hard, to avoid burnout later in the season.
Before starting this plan you will need all the equipment to swim, cycle and run, as well as a sports watch and compatible chest strap heart rate monitor. While most modern sports watches come with a wrist based optical heart rate monitor, these are notoriously unreliable, especially when you are sweaty and/or running.
You will also need to have a threshold run pace. This can be calculated by taking the result of a recent 5K/10K race and inputting it into the zones settings within TrainingPeaks.
This plan is designed for triathletes between seasons rather than for first time athletes, and assumes you are able to swim for 2000M (with breaks), as well as being able to cycle and run for an hour without issue.
