The Long Distance Triathlon Almere-Amsterdam Training Plan is crafted to prepare you for the unique demands of this iconic race, set entirely below sea level with its flat, fast courses and dynamic conditions. This comprehensive 44-week training plan matches the race’s challenging swim, bike, and run segments to ensure you’re race-ready and confident on race day.

The swim portion of the Long Distance Triathlon takes place in Weerwater, a calm sweetwater lake requiring excellent open-water skills and endurance. This training plan includes 166 swim sessions with video-guided open-water drills designed to refine your technique and boost efficiency, so you can power through the two laps without wasting energy. The counterclockwise swim and transition at Lumierepark are simulated through focused efforts to improve sighting, pacing, and smooth transitions.

The bike course features two laps of 90 km through flat, fast polder terrain with steady wind challenges and scenic views of the Oostvaardersplassen wildlife reserve and Amsterdam across the IJmeer. The plan’s 152 bike workouts utilize power-based ride structures and heart rate zones to build the strength and speed needed to maintain fast, steady pacing despite the wind resistance you’ll face. Long rides build your stamina, while interval sessions increase your power output for those key moments on race day.

The run course—four laps around the scenic Weerwater lake with a mix of urban architecture and green spaces—demands both endurance and mental toughness. The plan’s 122 run sessions combine heart rate and power-based intervals to enhance your running economy, speed, and stamina for the 42.2 km marathon distance. Strength training, with 96 sessions included, supports injury prevention and muscular endurance, crucial for finishing strong on a flat yet demanding course.
