This 44-week plan is designed specifically for Senior Triathletes 60+, recognizing that experience matters and that smart training balances endurance, strength, intensity, and recovery. Structured periodization provides a clear progression toward the demands of racing the Full Distance Triathlon New Zealand in Taupō.
.
Why This Plan Works for Taupō’s Demands
.
🌊 Swim Strong in Lake Taupō
Prepare for the 3.8km open-water swim with 166 sessions focused on technique, pacing, endurance, and open-water skills. The plan prepares you for swimming in cool 19°C water and navigating the clockwise shoreline course.
.
🚴 Bike Training for Rolling Terrain
Taupō’s 180km ride combines rural roads, rolling terrain, and long flats. With 152 bike sessions (185+ hours), training develops sustained endurance, pacing, and strength for the demands of two-lap long-course cycling.
.
🏃 Run Smart Along the Lakefront
Prepare for the 42.2km run through town and along Rainbow Bay with 122 structured sessions. Brick workouts provide opportunities to practice the bike-to-run transition, while pacing sessions develop long-course running durability.
.
🧠 Designed for Senior Triathletes 60+
Being 60+ doesn’t mean training without intensity. It means using volume, intensity, strength, and recovery deliberately. A 2:1 training cycle—two progressive weeks followed by a recovery week—provides regular opportunities to absorb the training before building again.
.
📱 Device-Compatible Training
Workouts sync with compatible Garmin and other smart devices. Sessions use RPE, heart rate, and power zones to help guide effort and monitor training.
.
Your Two-Phase Journey to Taupō
.
✅ Base Phase (12 Weeks):

.

.
Training for Experienced 60+ Athletes

.
⚡ Strategically placed VO2 max and neuromuscular sessions to develop aerobic capacity, coordination, and movement efficiency
.
You already know what it takes to train for a full distance triathlon. The question is whether you want to spend the next 44 weeks figuring out the progression yourself—or start with a plan built specifically around the training and recovery needs of experienced 60+ athletes.
