Plan Description

The Full Distance Triathlon in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain presents a unique opportunity for endurance athletes: a calm 3.8 km swim in Ulibarri-Gamboa Lake, a scenic 180.2 km bike course through the Álava region and along parts of the Camino de Santiago, and a fast, flat 42.2 km run through the historic streets of the city center. To perform at your best on this beautiful and fast-paced course, a strategic, evidence-based training plan is essential.

This 44-week training plan is designed for serious triathletes aiming to optimize their performance in Vitoria-Gasteiz. It integrates periodized endurance science with practical weekly structure—preparing you for the demands of the course and the race day conditions.

✅ 12-Week Foundation Phase
Build durability and aerobic efficiency with structured progression—from 6 to 10 hours per week—ending with a brick endurance test to assess race-readiness.

✅ 32-Week Full Distance Triathlon Specific Training
Train using a proven 3:1 cycle (3 weeks build, 1 week recovery) tailored to your performance goals. Long rides mimic the course’s terrain, and run sessions mirror the flat, urban loops of the race.

✅ Periodized Performance Progression
Volume builds from 10 hours to 18 hours weekly, peaking in week 39. The final 4-week taper ensures peak freshness for race day.
