The Full Distance Triathlon in Vitoria-Gasteiz presents unique challenges and opportunities with its scenic yet demanding course. To excel, your training must reflect the race’s distinct characteristics: a single-loop 3.8 km swim in Ulibarri-Gamboa Lake’s clear waters, a record-setting 180.2 km bike course through Álava’s landscapes and historic Camino de Santiago, and a flat, four-loop 42.2 km run through Vitoria-Gasteiz’s vibrant city center.

How This 36-Week Intermediate Training Plan Prepares You

✅ Build Endurance with a Solid Base: The first 12 weeks establish foundational endurance, crucial for sustained performance in the lake swim and the lengthy bike segment. This phase accommodates athletes regardless of prior base mileage, ensuring gradual and effective conditioning.

✅ Strategic Periodization with 3/1 Workload: The following 24 weeks feature a training cycle of three focused weeks followed by one week of active recovery. This approach balances stress and recovery, optimizing adaptations for peak race readiness.

✅ Strength and Technique Integration: Early emphasis on strength training and swim technique sets a robust physical and technical foundation, essential for efficient stroke mechanics in the lake’s cool 21°C waters and to power through the extended cycling section.

✅ Progressive Volume and Intensity: Starting at 7 training hours per week in week 13 and increasing up to 16 hours, the plan carefully develops aerobic endurance, VO2 interval capacity, anaerobic threshold, and tempo workouts, tailored for the demands of the Vitoria-Gasteiz bike and run courses.

✅ Race-Specific Conditioning: Including open water swim drills, progressive brick workouts, and run sessions designed around heart rate and power zones, the plan mirrors race conditions, especially the flat urban run loops and the technical bike segments.

✅ Expert Guidance and Support: Alongside detailed video tutorials for swim drills, cycling intervals, running workouts, and strength exercises, you receive ongoing email coaching support to adjust and refine your training, addressing your individual needs as race day approaches.
