Train Smarter for the Full Distance Triathlon New Zealand — Taupō Awaits

The Full Distance Triathlon New Zealand in Taupō isn’t just a race—it’s a rite of passage. Set in the heart of the North Island, it features a pristine 3.8km swim in Lake Taupō, a 180km ride through rolling green countryside, and a 42.2km four-lap run along the lake’s edge—powered by one of the most supportive triathlon communities in the world. With comfortable race-day conditions around 74°F (23°C), this event is as scenic as it is challenging. Our 36-week Full Distance Triathlon training plan is specifically built to prepare you for this iconic course and help you show up confident, strong, and ready to race your best.

This plan begins with a 12-week base phase, designed to build aerobic endurance, strength, and durability—no prior mileage required. You’ll develop your engine from the ground up with smart volume increases, technique refinement, and progressive workouts that respect your body’s adaptation rate.

Once you’ve built your foundation, the plan transitions into a 24-week full Distance Triathlon-specific phase, utilizing a proven 3:1 training cycle—three focused weeks followed by a recovery week. Expect gradual volume increases from 7 to 16 hours per week, including long rides, tempo intervals, open water prep, brick workouts, and race-specific simulation days.

Strength training is integrated early to reduce injury risk and build muscular endurance—essential for conquering Taupō’s rolling bike terrain and multi-lap marathon. You’ll also benefit from targeted V02 max work, anaerobic threshold sessions, and endurance-focused track runs that sharpen speed while boosting stamina.

Every session is backed by purpose. You'll receive instructional swim videos, structured intervals using Heart Rate and Power, and detailed strength routines—crafted for intermediate triathletes ready to level up.
