Train Smarter. Prepare Specifically for the Full Distance Triathlon New Zealand in Taupō.
.
The Full Distance Triathlon New Zealand combines a 3.8km swim in Lake Taupō, a 180km bike through rolling countryside, and a four-lap 42.2km lakefront run. Preparing for those demands requires more than simply increasing your weekly training hours. You need a progression that develops the right fitness at the right time.
.
This 44-week Full Distance Triathlon Training Plan provides that roadmap, beginning with the foundation and progressively moving toward race-specific preparation for Taupō.
.
Your First 12 Weeks — Build the Foundation
.
The first 12 weeks are designed for athletes who don't yet have a structured training base. Training begins around 4.5 hours per week and progressively builds toward 8 hours, giving you time to establish consistency before moving into higher-volume full-distance training.
.
Swim sessions develop technique, endurance, and open-water skills for Lake Taupō’s 3.8km swim, while bike, run, and strength sessions establish the aerobic and muscular foundation needed for the next phase.
.
Your Next 32 Weeks — Prepare for Full-Distance Racing
.
Once the foundation is established, the plan transitions into 32 weeks of increasingly race-specific preparation. Weekly training progressively builds toward a peak of approximately 16 hours as endurance, intensity, strength, and race-specific sessions become more demanding.
.
Long rides develop the sustained endurance required for Taupō’s 180km bike course. Brick workouts provide opportunities to practice running after cycling, while progressively longer runs and pacing sessions prepare you for managing effort across the four-lap 42.2km run.
.
Strategically placed “B” and “C” races can also be incorporated into the progression, giving you opportunities to practice pacing, fueling, transitions, and race-day execution before your primary event.
.
Why the Progression Matters
.
The goal isn't simply to train more. It's to know what you should be training now, what comes next, and why each phase matters.
.
VO2 max intervals, threshold work, aerobic endurance, strength, swim technique, bricks, long-course pacing, and recovery each have a defined place within the 44-week progression. As race day gets closer, the emphasis gradually shifts from developing general fitness toward preparing for the specific demands of Taupō.
