Training for the Full Distance Triathlon New Zealand in Taupō is a major commitment. The last thing you need is to spend six months wondering: Am I doing enough? Am I doing too much? Am I actually training for what this course demands?
.
This Six-Month Advanced Full Distance Triathlon Plan gives experienced athletes a clear answer. Every phase has a purpose, progressing you toward the 3.8km Lake Taupō swim, 180km rolling bike course, and four-lap 42.2km lakefront run.
.
The goal is simple: arrive at race week knowing you followed a structured progression built around the demands of full-distance racing—rather than hoping the training you pieced together was enough.
.
Who This Plan Is For
.
This is an advanced plan for athletes who already have a solid aerobic foundation. Training begins at just under 10.5 hours in Week 1 and progressively builds to a peak of 18 hours per week. If you’re not ready for that training load, build your base first.
.
What Your Training Includes
.
✅ Aerobic Endurance – Build the foundation for sustained full-distance efforts.
.
✅ VO2 Max & Threshold Intervals – Strategically placed intensity to develop aerobic capacity and sustainable speed.
.
✅ Anaerobic Power + ATP-PC Work – High-intensity sessions targeting power and short-duration efforts.
.
✅ Hill Strength Intervals – Prepare for the demands of Taupō’s rolling bike terrain.
.
✅ Open-Water Swim Preparation – Technique videos, sighting, pacing, and skills for Lake Taupō.
.
✅ Structured Brick Workouts – Practice running after sustained cycling and develop familiarity with the bike-to-run transition.
.
✅ Heart Rate & Power-Based Sessions – Use measurable targets to guide bike and run intensity.
.
✅ Guided Strength Training – Integrated strength work supporting mobility, stability, and long-course durability.
.
Why the Structure Matters
.
You don't need more random workouts. You need to know what belongs in your training now—and what can wait.
.
This plan organizes endurance, intensity, strength, recovery, and race-specific work into a progression from Week 1 through race week. Instead of constantly asking whether you should go longer, harder, easier, or recover, you have a framework showing you what today's training is intended to accomplish.
.
That’s the real value of the plan: less second-guessing and more purposeful training.
.
You’ve chosen Taupō. Now choose a training structure built around getting you there.
