Picture three dates on your calendar: your first confident open-water swim, your first practice race, and your Veracruz finish line. None has to happen by guesswork.
This 44-week Beginner Half Distance Triathlon Training Plan gives you a route from no required training base to preparing for 1.9 km in the Gulf of Mexico, 90 km of coastal cycling, and a 21.1 km waterfront run. You don't need to arrive knowing how to train for all three. You need a sequence you can follow.
THE FIRST MILESTONES ARE SMALL ON PURPOSE
Over 12 foundation weeks, develop aerobic endurance, strength, and swim technique before tackling the demands of a longer race build. Instructional swim-drill videos and beginner-specific strength sessions show you what to practice. Structured bike and run/jog workouts use heart rate and perceived effort so you can learn what sustainable training feels like.
Then you have 32 weeks to prepare specifically for Veracruz. The race-focused phase starts at approximately 9.5 hours in week 13 and reaches 14 hours in week 39. Endurance sessions grow more demanding as VO2 max and anaerobic threshold work are introduced. Progression is deliberate; you are not expected to train like an experienced competitor on day one.
A FIRST RACE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE YOUR FIRST REHEARSAL
C races create low-pressure chances to practice equipment, transitions, and pacing. B races offer a more complete rehearsal of your swim-bike-run routine. Both turn unfamiliar race-day decisions into things you've encountered before.
On Veracruz's single-loop ocean swim at Gaviotas Beach, technique and composure matter. Its flat, two-loop bike course invites enthusiasm, but disciplined effort leaves more for the 21.1 km waterfront run. Your workouts and practice events help you approach those choices with experience, not assumptions.
Personalized email coach support can clarify sessions as you progress. The Triathlon Fueling Calculator helps plan what to eat and drink, the Race Pace Strategy Calculator maps manageable effort across disciplines, and the Race Predictor Calculator offers a reference point as fitness develops.
The finish line may be 44 weeks away. The reason to begin is much closer: your next workout already has a purpose, and each milestone brings the Veracruz Half Distance Triathlon into sharper focus.
