For a beginner, the biggest advantage of 44 weeks is not simply having more time. It is having enough time to learn the sport in layers instead of rushing from one challenge to the next. This Challenge Canberra 100 plan begins with no prerequisite mileage and builds gradually toward the event’s 2 km swim, 80 km bike, and 18 km run.
The opening 12 weeks focus on strength, conditioning, aerobic endurance, and swim technique. That foundation gives you time to learn how training should feel before the workload becomes more race-specific.
Week 13 begins the 32-week Challenge Canberra 100 phase at approximately 9.5 hours per week, progressing to a peak near 14 hours in week 39. RPE and heart-rate guided bike and Run/Jog sessions give you clear intensity targets, while beginner-specific strength sessions provide structure without unnecessary complexity.
As the plan develops, endurance remains the backbone, but the work becomes more specific. VO2 intervals are introduced progressively, followed by anaerobic-threshold training as your fitness and experience grow. Instructional swim videos reinforce technique, while open-water and multisport preparation help turn individual swim, bike, and run fitness into actual triathlon readiness.
The Canberra course makes those skills relevant. The 2 km lake swim rewards calm technique and efficiency. The four-lap 80 km bike combines fast sections, rolling terrain, and the Hindmarsh climb, so learning to control effort matters more than simply riding harder. By the time you reach the three-lap 18 km run, the goal is to know how to settle into pace rather than discover that skill on race day.
B and C races give you safe places to practice. Use C races for transitions, equipment, pacing, and fueling. Use B races as stronger rehearsals before Challenge Canberra 100.
The Race Predictor Calculator gives you a developing performance reference, the Race Pace Strategy Calculator helps organize race-day effort, and the Triathlon Fueling Calculator helps you rehearse nutrition. Personalized email coach support is available when a workout or training decision needs clarification.
You do not need to start as a long-course triathlete. Forty-four weeks gives you the time to become one step by step.
