Challenge Canberra 100 gives a Senior 60+ athlete enough race to require patience, but enough variation to reward sharpness. This 44-week plan is built for athletes who want to develop endurance without sacrificing strength, coordination, or recovery quality on the way to the 2 km swim, 80 km bike, and 18 km run.
The first 12 weeks are intentionally developmental. Training begins around 4 hours per week and gradually rises toward 10.5, with emphasis on aerobic conditioning, mobility, movement quality, swim technique, and foundational strength. From there, a 32-week triathlon-specific phase carries the work forward, with peak volume around 12.5 hours per week.
A 2:1 structure—two progressive weeks followed by one recovery week—creates a repeatable rhythm for building fitness while managing accumulated fatigue. Long, lower-intensity sessions support aerobic durability, while later VO2 max work, pacing sessions, and controlled intervals help preserve higher-end capacity. Resistance training provides useful loading for muscle retention, bone health, and overall durability.
Challenge Canberra 100 then becomes the test case for that preparation. Technique-driven swim sessions and open-water work prepare you for the 2 km lake swim. On the four-lap 80 km bike, heart rate, power, and RPE help you regulate effort across fast sections, rolling terrain, and the Hindmarsh climb. Brick sessions, neuromuscular drills, and transition practice prepare you to begin the three-lap 18 km run with control and coordination rather than urgency.
B and C races give the long build practical checkpoints. Use C races to rehearse equipment, transitions, pacing, and fueling. Use B races to pressure-test execution before your A race.
The Race Predictor Calculator helps track a developing performance reference. The Race Pace Strategy Calculator organizes race-day effort, while the Triathlon Fueling Calculator helps refine nutrition. Personalized email coach support is available when training intensity, recovery, or race strategy needs context.
Forty-four weeks gives you time to progress deliberately, recover intelligently, and arrive at Challenge Canberra 100 with both endurance and sharpness still intact.
