Challenge Canberra 100 can look complicated when you are new to long-course racing. This 36-week Beginner plan removes that complexity by giving you a clear sequence: first build the foundation, then learn how to turn that fitness into race-day endurance across the 2 km swim, 80 km bike, and 18 km run.
There is no minimum mileage requirement to begin. The opening 12 weeks develop aerobic fitness, strength, and swim technique at a manageable pace. Instructional swim drills reinforce efficiency, while Run/Jog and bike sessions use RPE and heart rate so you can learn how different intensities should feel without being buried in numbers.
After that foundation, the 24-week Challenge Canberra 100 phase begins at approximately 7 hours per week and gradually builds to about 12 hours. Endurance work expands first, followed by tempo training, open-water swimming, and progressive brick sessions that teach you how the three disciplines fit together.
That progression matches the race. The 2 km lake swim becomes less intimidating when open-water practice and technique work are already familiar. On the four-lap 80 km bike, structured effort helps you stay controlled across fast sections, rolling terrain, and the Hindmarsh climb. Brick training then prepares you for the three-lap 18 km run so your first experience of running on tired legs does not happen on race day.
Beginner-specific strength sessions include detailed video instruction to support good form, movement quality, and durability as training volume increases.
Use the Race Predictor Calculator to establish a reference point as your fitness develops, the Race Pace Strategy Calculator to organize your swim, bike, and run effort, and the Triathlon Fueling Calculator to build a practical nutrition approach you can rehearse before Canberra. Personalized email coach support is available when a workout, training intensity, or progression question needs clarification.
You do not need to arrive with long-course experience. You need enough time, a sensible progression, and a plan that tells you what to do next. Thirty-six weeks gives you all three.
