Challenge Canberra 100 is where shorter-distance fitness has to become longer-distance judgment. This 36-week plan is built for Competitive Intermediate athletes who already know how to train, but want more control, durability, and race-specific execution before taking on the 2 km swim, 80 km bike, and 18 km run.
The first 12 weeks rebuild and strengthen the foundation, making this a practical option even if your recent endurance training has been inconsistent. Swim technique, strength, and aerobic conditioning come first so the following 24-week race-specific phase can focus on performance rather than playing catch-up.
That second phase begins at approximately 7.5 hours per week and builds to around 12 hours. A 3:1 structure uses three progressive training weeks followed by one active-recovery week, giving you a repeatable rhythm for absorbing load while continuing to move forward.
For Canberra, that progression matters. The 2 km lake swim is supported by technique work, open-water practice, and structured sessions that reinforce efficiency. The four-lap 80 km bike combines fast sections, rolling terrain, and the Hindmarsh climb, so heart rate and power-based workouts help you control effort instead of overreacting to every change in terrain. Tempo sessions, VO2 intervals, and anaerobic-threshold work build the range needed to ride hard without sabotaging the run.
Progressive brick workouts then prepare you for the three-lap 18 km run, where pacing discipline and durability can matter as much as raw speed.
Use the Race Predictor Calculator to establish a performance reference as fitness develops, the Race Pace Strategy Calculator to organize swim, bike, and run execution, and the Triathlon Fueling Calculator to refine nutrition before race day. Personalized email coach support is available when a workout, recovery decision, or pacing question needs more context.
Thirty-six weeks gives you the space to rebuild, sharpen, and rehearse instead of rushing straight toward race day. That extra preparation depth can be the difference between simply arriving fit and arriving ready to race Challenge Canberra 100 well.
