A 36-week runway gives a Masters athlete something more valuable than extra mileage: time to sequence the work properly. This Challenge Canberra 100 plan is designed for competitive athletes over 40 who want to build fitness without compressing strength, endurance, intensity, and recovery into the same few months.
The first 12 weeks rebuild the foundation. Aerobic endurance, functional strength, core stability, and swim efficiency are developed before the 24-week race-specific phase begins. That matters because the later work can then be layered onto a stronger platform instead of competing with basic conditioning.
Training starts at approximately 7.5 hours per week and builds to about 12 hours. A 3:1 structure of three progressive weeks followed by one recovery week helps manage training stress while preserving consistency. Heart rate, power, and RPE guide key sessions, with Garmin and compatible-device integration keeping execution straightforward.
Challenge Canberra 100 then becomes the target. The 2 km lake swim is supported by technique work, video drills, and open-water practice. The four-lap 80 km bike rewards controlled effort across fast sections, rolling terrain, and the Hindmarsh climb, so tempo work, VO2 max sessions, and threshold training develop the ability to change gears without overspending energy. Structured brick workouts prepare you to begin the three-lap 18 km run with control rather than simply survive the transition.
Masters-focused strength training supports durability, movement quality, and muscle retention throughout the build. As race day approaches, training shifts toward threshold precision, race-pace execution, and the specific demands of linking all three disciplines together.
Use the Race Predictor Calculator to track a performance reference, the Race Pace Strategy Calculator to organize race-day effort, and the Triathlon Fueling Calculator to refine nutrition before Canberra. Personalized email coach support is available when recovery, intensity, or race execution needs clarification.
The value of 36 weeks is not more work. It is better allocation of work, recovery, and race-specific preparation so more of your fitness is available when Challenge Canberra 100 begins.
