At 60+, performance is not about doing less. It is about applying the right training stress, recovering from it, and preserving the strength, coordination, and endurance that let you keep racing well. This 24-week Challenge Canberra 100 plan is built for experienced senior triathletes preparing for the event’s 2 km swim, 80 km bike, and 18 km run.
You should begin able to swim 1,500 meters comfortably, ride 30 miles with steady endurance, and run 5 miles consistently. From that foundation, training starts at approximately 7.5 hours per week and peaks near 12.5 hours.
The defining feature is the 2:1 structure: two progressive training weeks followed by one recovery week. That gives you repeated opportunities to build fitness, absorb the work, and return ready for the next block instead of allowing fatigue to accumulate unchecked.
Canberra’s four-lap bike course combines fast sections, rolling terrain, and the Hindmarsh climb. Heart-rate and power-based sessions help you manage those changes in effort with precision, while later VO2 max and threshold work supports the ability to respond when the course demands more. Low-intensity aerobic sessions continue to build the endurance needed to carry that effort deep into the race.
The 2 km lake swim is supported by video technique drills and structured swim sessions that sync with compatible devices. Senior-specific strength work provides resistance and bone-loading stimulus while supporting muscle retention, mobility, movement quality, and durability. Transition drills, neuromuscular work, and brick training reinforce coordination and help prepare you to begin the three-lap 18 km run with control.
Use the Race Predictor Calculator to track a performance reference as fitness develops, the Race Pace Strategy Calculator to organize effort across all three disciplines, and the Triathlon Fueling Calculator to rehearse a practical race-day nutrition approach. Personalized email coach support is available when training intensity, recovery, or race execution needs clarification.
The objective is not simply to finish another race. It is to prepare intelligently enough that strength, endurance, and race-day judgment are still working together when Challenge Canberra 100 gets difficult.
