Challenge Canberra 100 asks an intermediate triathlete to do more than extend Olympic-distance fitness. Its 2 km lake swim, fast 80 km bike and 18 km run reward an athlete who can hold controlled effort, manage repeated laps and still run efficiently after riding hard. This 24-week triathlon training plan turns your existing short-course experience into the endurance, pacing discipline and race-specific durability needed for Canberra.
The course sets the priorities. The sheltered swim off Black Mountain Peninsula combines a 1,400 m loop with a 600 m loop, so open-water work and instructional swim drills reinforce efficiency and confidence before race day. The four-lap bike mixes fast straights, gentle undulations and the Hindmarsh climb. Heart rate, RPE and power-based sessions teach you to control effort instead of wasting matches on every rise, while progressive VO2 max and anaerobic-threshold work develops the ability to ride strongly without sacrificing the run.
Then comes an 18 km, three-lap lakeside run. Brick sessions and structured run intervals prepare you to settle into pace on tired legs and maintain concentration as the laps accumulate.
24 weeks. 7 hours per week to start. Approximately 12 hours at peak. The 3:1 structure gives you three progressive training weeks followed by an active-recovery week, creating a repeatable rhythm for absorbing the work rather than simply piling it on. Strength sessions with video instruction support durability and movement quality as volume rises, and Garmin-compatible workouts make execution straightforward.
Use the Race Predictor Calculator as a fitness reference as preparation develops. Build your swim, bike and run execution with the Race Pace Strategy Calculator, then use the Triathlon Fueling Calculator to shape a practical nutrition plan you can rehearse before Canberra. Personalized email coach support is available when you need help interpreting a session, pacing decision or training progression.
You already know how to race a triathlon. The next step is learning how to distribute your fitness across 100 km with enough control to make the final 18 km count.
