A 44-week build changes the equation for a Senior 60+ athlete. Instead of forcing fitness on a short timeline, this plan gives you space to develop endurance, strength, coordination, and race-specific confidence in a sequence that supports long-term consistency.
Challenge Shanghai asks you to cover a 1.9 km swim, 87 km bike, and 20 km run. The course is fast, but the total duration still demands restraint, efficient movement, and enough durability to keep your form together late in the race.
The first 12 weeks establish that foundation. Training starts around 4 hours per week and gradually builds toward 10.5, with emphasis on aerobic conditioning, mobility, foundational strength, and technique across all three disciplines. The focus is on building capacity without unnecessary fatigue.
From there, the 32-week triathlon-specific phase develops the demands that matter more as race day approaches. Weekly volume peaks near 12.5 hours. Brick sessions rehearse the bike-to-run transition, VO2 max intervals and pacing work maintain higher-end aerobic fitness, and technique-driven swim progressions prepare you for Shanghai’s two-lap open-water start.
A 2:1 work-to-recovery rhythm gives you two productive weeks followed by one recovery week, while heart rate, power, and RPE help keep effort appropriately controlled. Strength work supports muscle retention, bone-loading stimulus, mobility, and overall durability. Garmin, smartwatches, and other compatible platforms make the workouts easy to carry into daily training.
B and C races are built into the process as useful checkpoints. They give you opportunities to test pacing, transitions, fueling, and race-day routines before your primary event.
Use the Race Predictor Calculator to estimate potential performance, the Race Pace Strategy Calculator to plan your swim-bike-run execution, and the Triathlon Fueling Calculator to shape your nutrition strategy. Personalized email coach support is available when recovery, progression, or race-week decisions need individual guidance.
This is not a rush-to-the-start-line program. It is a long-range performance plan for athletes who want to keep racing with purpose, build resilience over time, and arrive at Challenge Shanghai with preparation that has been earned week by week.
