For a Senior 60+ athlete, the value of 36 weeks is not simply more training. It is more room to rebuild carefully, absorb the work, and arrive at Challenge Shanghai with endurance, strength, and race-day control developed in the right order.
This plan begins with a 12-week base phase, making it suitable even if you are returning after an extended break. Early training restores aerobic consistency, reinforces swim technique, develops functional strength, and supports mobility before higher-intensity work is introduced. From there, the program transitions into 24 weeks of increasingly race-specific preparation for Shanghai’s 1.9 km swim, 87 km bike, and 20 km run.
The structure is deliberately conservative where recovery matters most. A 2:1 work-to-recovery rhythm gives you two progressive weeks followed by one recovery week, helping manage cumulative fatigue across the build. Weekly volume starts around 7.5 hours and progresses toward approximately 12, providing enough training stimulus without relying on excessive mileage.
As fitness develops, the plan introduces tempo work, open-water practice, brick sessions, VO2 max intervals, threshold training, and neuromuscular drills. The purpose is not intensity for its own sake. It is to help you stay coordinated, efficient, and durable when Shanghai’s four-loop bike and four-lap run begin to magnify small pacing errors.
Strength training supports muscle retention, bone-loading stimulus, joint function, and long-term athletic capacity. Heart rate and power-based sessions add precision, while Garmin and other smart-platform compatibility makes workouts easier to follow. Video-guided swim drills provide additional technical support for the two-lap open-water start.
The Race Pace Strategy Calculator helps organize your effort across all three disciplines. Use the Triathlon Fueling Calculator to build a practical nutrition plan and the Race Predictor Calculator to estimate potential performance as the training cycle progresses. Personalized email coach support is there when recovery, pacing, progression, or race-week decisions need context beyond the written plan.
This is a long-horizon performance plan for an athlete who wants to keep racing with purpose. Give yourself the time to build intelligently, protect consistency, and meet Challenge Shanghai with preparation that respects both your ambition and your recovery needs.
