Competing at the Half Distance Triathlon in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain means preparing for a stunning but challenging course. This 36-week training plan for Masters athletes 40+ is designed to get you fully ready—physically, mentally, and strategically—so you can perform your best across every discipline on race day.

How This Plan Prepares You for the Vitoria-Gasteiz Course

🏊 Swim – 1.9 km in Ulibarri-Gamboa Lake
You’ll face calm, clear, flat waters—perfect conditions if you’ve trained for both endurance and efficiency. This plan includes progressive swim workouts with drills, pacing sets, and open-water simulation so you feel confident navigating the lake and exiting strong for T1.

🚴 Bike – 90 km through Álava and the Camino de Santiago
The single-loop ride includes scenic roads, rolling terrain, and roughly 500m of elevation gain. Structured interval sessions, tempo rides, and power-based long rides prepare you to handle sustained efforts while staying efficient on varied gradients. By race day, you’ll be ready for both the physical challenge and the breathtaking beauty of the region.

🏃 Run – 21 km through downtown Vitoria-Gasteiz
The flat, fast two-loop run with 240m of total elevation is lined with thousands of energetic spectators. Training builds your aerobic base first, then adds brick workouts, VO₂ max sessions, and threshold runs. You’ll be ready to hold steady race pace, manage fatigue, and finish strong in Plaza España’s unforgettable atmosphere.
