Plan Description

The Half Distance Triathlon in Omaha offers a spectacular but challenging course—our 24-week training plan is built to prepare you for every mile. From the calm single-loop swim in Lake Cunningham to the rolling hills of Douglas County and the Missouri River run, each session is purposefully designed to match race-day terrain and conditions.

⚠ Base Training Requirement – You should have an established aerobic base before starting. You’ll begin with 9 hours in Week 1, building to 14.5 hours by Week 19.

🌊 Open Water Readiness – Weekly swim sessions combine pool drills with open water training, building confidence for Lake Cunningham’s calm but unpredictable reservoir. You’ll practice sighting, pacing, and efficient stroke technique to emerge from the water ready for the bike.

🚴 Power for the Hills – The bike leg’s rolling hills and fast descents demand a mix of strength, endurance, and technical control. Targeted hill repeats, VO₂ max intervals, and power-based rides prepare you for sustained climbs and speed on Omaha’s rural roads.

🏃 Bridge & River Trail Speed – The run takes you over the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and along scenic paved trails by the Missouri River. Our plan builds endurance with long runs, tempo sessions, and brick workouts to keep your legs sharp for the two-lap finish.

✅ Data-Driven Structure – Heart rate and power-based workouts sync to Garmin, giving you precision pacing on every ride and run.
✅ Strength & Stability – Functional and conventional strength training improve posture, prevent injuries, and sustain form over 70.3 miles.
✅ Periodized Progression – A proven 3:1 training-to-recovery cycle ensures continuous improvement while preventing overtraining.
✅ Course-Specific Simulation – Sessions replicate Omaha’s unique terrain, from lake swims to bridge climbs, so race day feels familiar.
