Plan Description

The Dallas–Little Elm Half Distance Triathlon is known for its unique combination of cool open-water swimming, fast rural cycling, and spectator-friendly, crushed gravel trails. This 36-week Half Distance Triathlon training plan has been intentionally designed to prepare senior triathletes (age 60+) to race this course with strength, endurance, and confidence.

🏊‍♂️ Swim Readiness
With historical water temperatures ranging from 58–71°F, there's a strong likelihood of a wetsuit-legal swim. The training plan includes video-based swim drills and gradual open-water preparation to build endurance for the one-loop 1.2-mile swim. Specific workouts improve sighting, stroke efficiency, and cold-water adaptation—crucial for a confident beach-to-beach start and finish.

🚴‍♀️ Bike Strength for Smooth, Fast Rural Roads
The 56-mile bike course features gentle inclines, no chip seal, and wide-open Texas views. This plan develops power and endurance through progressive long rides, threshold intervals, and brick workouts—replicating race-day demands. Combined with strength training for bone health, you'll feel strong and stable across the entire ride.

🏃‍♂️ Run Precision for Crushed Gravel Trails
The 13.9-mile run on Little Elm’s well-groomed trail system is a flat, three-loop design with strong community support. The plan’s structured aerobic base and neuromuscular training improve cadence and stability—perfect for the fast, forgiving surface. Athletes will arrive on race day ready to sustain pace and enjoy the high-energy atmosphere.
