Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps, the Half Distance Triathlon in Wanaka, New Zealand offers one of the most breathtaking — and deceptively demanding — race environments. Our 36-week Half Distance Triathlon training plan is designed specifically for Masters athletes over 40 to help you meet the course’s unique demands with strength, endurance, and confidence.

✅ Lake Swim Preparation
With water temps around 15°C and a potential for choppy conditions, this plan integrates regular open-water simulation swims and video-supported drills to build confidence in variable lake conditions. You'll improve sighting, cold water tolerance, and stroke efficiency — essential for Roys Bay's rectangular, wind-exposed course.

✅ Built for a Rolling, Scenic Bike Course
The 90 km ride through Glendhu Bay and Mount Aspiring National Park includes smooth terrain and punchy climbs. Our training plan includes power-based interval sessions and tempo rides tailored to mimic Wanaka’s rolling profile — giving you the strength and pacing strategy you need for two focused laps out to Treble Cone.

✅ Run Strong Along the Lakeside Trails
From scenic lakefront paths to that one steep climb at 7 km, this 21.1 km run requires both grit and smart pacing. The plan includes structured brick workouts and race-pace simulation runs on gentle inclines, helping you run efficiently off the bike and handle elevation changes without burnout.
