Train Smart for the Half Distance Triathlon in Wānaka, New Zealand

Our Beginner's Six-Month Half Distance Triathlon Training Plan is built specifically to prepare you for this one-of-a-kind race.

From the crystal-clear, often chilly waters of Roys Bay to the scenic, rolling bike ride toward Treble Cone, and the lakeside trail run with its one steep kicker—this plan trains you for every challenge the Wānaka course throws your way.

How this Plan Prepares You for Wānaka:
✅ Open-Water Swim Confidence: With swim drills focused on sighting, breathing, and pacing, plus optional open-water simulation sets, you’ll be ready for Wānaka’s occasionally choppy Lake Wānaka swim—wetsuit and all.

✅ Bike Strength for Punchy Climbs: Structured bike sessions build strength and endurance for the rolling 90 km course, including intervals that simulate climbs like those you'll face near Mount Aspiring National Park.

✅ Trail-Ready Running: The plan includes off-road run sessions and hill repeats to mirror the undulating terrain and key 7 km climb along the lakefront run course.

✅ Endurance Meets Technique: Early phases build your aerobic base, while later blocks introduce VO2 max intervals, threshold sessions, and tempo workouts—vital for sustaining pace over the Half Distance.
