Racing the Half Distance Triathlon in Encarnación, Paraguay? Our 36-week Beginner Training Plan is specifically crafted to prepare you—mentally and physically—for race day. From the calm swim at San José Beach to the scenic and rolling Costanera bike course and the spirited run that ends at the Sambódromo, this training plan equips you to perform confidently in every leg of the event.
No experience? No problem. This plan begins with no base mileage requirement, making it ideal for beginners eager to take on their first Half Distance Triathlon.
You’ll start with a 12-week foundation phase, focused on building endurance, developing strong aerobic capacity, and enhancing swim technique. Our swimming drills—paired with instructional videos—prepare you for the single-loop 1.9 km swim in the placid waters off Bolik Pier. Run and bike sessions are based on Rate of Perceived Effort (RPE) and heart rate, helping you train smart without overtraining.
Next, you’ll enter the 24-week race-specific phase, where training gradually builds from 7 to 12 hours per week. You'll develop the endurance required to handle the 90 km rolling bike course, featuring over 3,000 feet of elevation, with confidence and control. This section includes focused tempo rides, strength training, and brick workouts—vital for managing transitions and pacing during the race. The two-loop 21.1 km run along the vibrant Encarnación waterfront is simulated in training with progressive long runs and race-paced intervals.
