The Half Distance Ruidoso Triathlon offers breathtaking views and bold challenges — a cool, high-altitude lake swim, a hilly 56-mile bike through mountain roads toward Hondo, and a 13.1-mile run across neighborhoods and forest-lined paths in Midtown Ruidoso. This unique course demands more than general preparation — it calls for a structured, terrain-specific training plan that builds endurance, strength, and mental resilience.

This 36-week Half Distance Triathlon training plan is specifically designed to prepare you for the elevation shifts, rolling hills, and high-altitude environment of Ruidoso. Progressive bike workouts build leg strength and climbing confidence — perfect for tackling the out-and-back ride with significant climbs.

🏊 Swim-Ready for Cold, Clear Waters
Start with 12 weeks of skill-focused swim training, including guided drills and video instruction. You'll develop efficient technique and confidence for the 1.2-mile swim in the crisp waters of Grindstone Lake — even if you're new to open-water racing.

🚴 Climb Strong, Ride Smooth
The plan includes interval sessions, long endurance rides, and intensity-based sessions (using heart rate or RPE), so your body adapts to the elevation and length of Ruidoso’s demanding bike course.
