Set on the stunning, eco-rich Chongming Island—just 90 minutes from downtown Shanghai—the Half Distance Triathlon Shanghai offers a flat, fast course through lush greenery and natural wildlife. With a calm lake swim, smooth highway ride, and scenic lakeside run, this race is the perfect opportunity for a breakthrough performance. And now, you can train for it with a plan built specifically for you.

Why This Plan Works
Our 36-week beginner training plan is designed for athletes just like you—those who are new to the Half Distance Triathlon or returning with fresh motivation. No previous triathlon experience required. What you do need is a desire to succeed, and a reliable roadmap to get there.

You’ll begin with a 12-week foundation phase focused on building core endurance, strength, and proper technique. Instructional swim drills help you develop efficiency in open water. Bike and run workouts are based on Rate of Perceived Effort (RPE) and heart rate—ensuring you train smart and avoid burnout.

Then, we guide you through a 24-week Half Distance Triathlon build phase, gradually increasing volume and intensity. You’ll start at 7 hours per week and peak at 12. Each session is intentionally designed to simulate real race conditions—brick workouts, tempo sets, and open-water swim prep are all included.

Strength training is built in, with expert-led video tutorials to teach you proper form and injury prevention techniques—critical for beginner triathletes seeking sustainable progress.

From the lake swim at Bright Tian Yuan to the flat, fast ride on Beiyan Highway and a scenic run in warm, manageable temperatures—this plan accounts for the unique environment of the Half Distance Triathlon Shanghai.
