Plan Description

Tackling the Half Distance Triathlon in Acapulco means conquering warm ocean currents, a demanding bike climb with fast descents, and a hot, flat run under the tropical sun. This Beginner’s Six-Month Half Distance Triathlon Training Plan is designed specifically to prepare you for those exact race-day challenges—whether it’s your first half distance event or your return to form. You should have a four to six-week aerobic base training to lay a solid foundation before beginning.

🌊 Conquer the Ocean Swim
Kick off your race with confidence in the rolling-start, 1.9 km (1.2-mile) swim through the warm 84°F (29°C) waters of Playa Majahua. This plan integrates progressive swim workouts with open-water simulation drills, video-guided technique work, and endurance sets—ensuring you're calm, efficient, and fast in tropical conditions.

🚴 Dominate the Rolling Bike Course
The 90 km (56-mile) bike route opens with a 600-meter climb and stacks up to 1,600 meters of total elevation gain. You’ll train for this with structured hill intervals, tempo rides, and descending skills, all based on Heart Rate and RPE zones to mimic race effort and terrain. Your strength sessions will target key cycling muscles to power through the opening ascent and maintain control on the technical descents.

🏃 Finish Strong in the Heat
The flat, two-loop 21 km (13.1-mile) run along Avenida de las Palmas calls for both mental toughness and smart pacing in 88°F (31°C) heat. Our plan prioritizes hydration strategies, heat adaptation protocols, and pacing drills, so you’ll be ready to manage aid stations and sustain speed under pressure.
