Plan Description

Set in Harmony, Alberta, west of Calgary and near the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, this race includes a chilly two-loop lake swim, a rolling 56-mile bike through the eastern foothills, and a three-loop run weaving through the scenic Bow River valley and golf course paths. Our 44-week Intermediate Training Plan is built to help you meet those demands with precision and confidence.

✔️ Build Foundational Endurance for Lake Harmony
The plan begins with a 12-week base phase, ideal for athletes starting without a training background. This phase gradually develops aerobic capacity and swim-specific endurance—critical for managing the two-loop swim in ~70°F (21°C) water. Open water simulation workouts prepare you for the Aussie exit and cold-water start.

✔️ Train for Elevation and Wind on the Calgary Bike Course
During the 32-week specific training phase, you'll focus on longer rides with structured heart rate and power targets. These simulate the undulating terrain and potential headwinds of Calgary’s rural roads. Two-loop rides and tempo intervals develop stamina and resilience to elevation changes—matching race-day demands.

✔️ Refine Pacing and Durability for the Looping Run Course
With three out-and-back run loops along the Bow River and through Mickelson National Golf Course, mental focus and pacing are key. The plan incorporates progressive brick sessions and race-pace workouts to build confidence and prepare your legs for the repetition and terrain variability of the run.

✔️ Enhance Performance & Reduce Injury Risk
Strength training and mobility routines are integrated weekly to improve durability and efficiency. You’ll also benefit from VO₂ max intervals and threshold work to enhance speed and fatigue resistance.
