This 44-week Advanced Training Plan is designed for experienced athletes preparing for the Half Distance Puerto Rico Triathlon, progressively developing the endurance, power, and durability needed for this distinctive course.
.
Puerto Rico combines a warm-water swim in Condado Lagoon, a rolling coastal bike course, and a challenging run through historic Old San Juan. The plan builds toward these demands with structured training across all three disciplines.
.
🏗️ 12-Week Base Phase:
The first 12 weeks require no prior base mileage, making the plan suitable for athletes returning from an extended break or rebuilding their fitness. This phase develops aerobic endurance, strength, and consistency before transitioning into the more specific training beginning in Week 13.
.
🔥 32-Week Half Distance Training Phase:
Weeks 13–44 progressively develop the fitness required for Half Distance racing. Training incorporates planned increases in volume and intensity along with recovery periods to support adaptation throughout the program.
.
📈 Progressive Training:
Training begins at approximately 9.5 hours per week and peaks at 14 hours. Rather than simply adding more hours, the plan progressively develops endurance, intensity, and race-specific preparation as you move closer to Puerto Rico.
.
💪 Strength Training:
Functional strength and progressive resistance training help develop durability for the demands of long-course racing. Strength receives greater emphasis earlier in the plan before transitioning toward a supporting role as race-specific swim, bike, and run training becomes more important.
.
🏊♂️ Swim:
Technique, endurance, and open-water preparation help develop the efficiency and confidence needed for the warm waters of Condado Lagoon.
.
🚴♂️ Bike:
Endurance, sustained power, and higher-intensity sessions prepare you for Puerto Rico’s rolling terrain and potential coastal winds.
.
🏃♂️ Run:
Aerobic endurance, hill-specific work, and threshold sessions prepare you for the changing terrain, heat, and accumulated fatigue of the Old San Juan run course.
.
🔬 Structured Performance Development:
The plan incorporates VO2 max, anaerobic threshold, anaerobic power, ATP-PC, aerobic endurance, and race-specific sessions throughout the training progression. Each phase builds on the previous work rather than treating individual workouts in isolation.
