This 44-Week Beginner Training Plan gives you time to build your foundation first, then progressively prepare for the swim, bike, and run demands of the Half Distance Puerto Rico Triathlon.
.
The plan combines a 12-week base phase with 32 weeks of Half Distance-specific training, giving beginner athletes a longer preparation window to develop endurance, technique, strength, and race-specific fitness.
.
12-Week Base Training Phase
The first 12 weeks focus on establishing the fitness you'll need before more demanding training begins. Swim technique drills and instructional sessions help improve your stroke and efficiency, while progressive bike, run, and strength sessions develop aerobic endurance and durability. No prior base mileage is required before Week 1.
.
32-Week Half Distance Training Phase
Beginning in Week 13, you transition into 32 weeks of more specific Half Distance preparation. Training progressively develops endurance, strength, and higher-intensity fitness through structured sessions including VO2 intervals and heart rate/RPE-based bike and run workouts.
.
Swim Technique & Open-Water Preparation
The warm Condado Lagoon swim rewards efficiency. Technique-focused sessions and drills help improve your stroke, body position, and endurance while progressively preparing you for open-water swimming and the distance you'll cover on race day.
.
Bike Endurance & Strength
The 56-mile bike course combines coastal roads, rolling terrain, and potential winds. Structured RPE and heart rate sessions progressively develop the aerobic endurance, pacing, and leg strength needed to manage the course without compromising your run.
.
Run Endurance for Old San Juan
The 13.1-mile run through Old San Juan adds hills and heat after you've already completed the swim and bike. RPE-based sessions progressively develop aerobic endurance, pacing, and the ability to continue running effectively as fatigue accumulates.
.
Why 44 Weeks?
For a beginner, more time can be an advantage. Instead of compressing your preparation into a shorter schedule, the first 12 weeks establish your foundation before the 32-week Half Distance phase begins. That gives you a clear progression from foundational training through increasingly race-specific preparation.
.
The goal isn't to make every week harder than the last. It's to give you enough time to develop the fitness, technique, and consistency required to arrive at race day prepared for what Puerto Rico asks of you.
