Trail 100K Training Plan: 26 Weeks, Beginner, Pace
A structured, progressive 26-week pace-based plan to get you to the finish line of your first trail 100K healthy and confident. It builds your aerobic base, climbing and descending strength and race-day routines step by step, with an easier week every fourth week.
The Race
A typical trail 100K: 100 km (62 mi) with about 2,500-4,500 m (8,000-15,000 ft) of climbing. Fourteen to twenty-four hours for most first-timers, often finishing in the dark, with long climbs and long descents. The plan works for any trail race of this distance: the race day is set as an event on the final Saturday.
Who It Is For
You have finished a trail 50K or 50-mile race, run 4 times a week (about 5 h) and can run 90 min on hilly trails.
Your 26 Weeks
- Phases: Preparation weeks 1-2, Base weeks 3-11, Build weeks 12-18, Specific weeks 19-23, Taper weeks 24-25, race week 26.
- Weekly: 4 runs and 2 strength sessions, about 4.1 h rising to 10.4 h of running.
- Long runs: 1h30 to 5h30, with back-to-back runs up to 2h30.
- Climbing: about 550 m rising to 2100 m a week.
- Trail skills: hill repeats, power hiking, downhill technique, fueling practice and a dress rehearsal.
- Strength: two RunForce 45-min sessions built in the TrainingPeaks Strength Builder (A: Force & Posterior Chain; B: Single-Leg & Mountain Durability), with a demonstration video for every exercise.
Pace Training
- Easy: 75-84% of threshold pace (most of your running)
- Steady: 84-90%
- Tempo: 88-94%
- Threshold: 95-100%
- Intervals: 102-108%
Every run is prescribed as % of your threshold pace, with a 30-min test in week 1 and retests later. Pace targets are used on flat and rolling ground; on climbs and technical trail the workouts tell you to run by effort.
