JFK 50 Mile Training Plan: 20 Weeks, Beginner, Running Power
Prepare specifically for the JFK 50 Mile with a structured 20-week running power training plan for runners new to this distance. It builds the aerobic durability, basic climbing and descending strength and race-day routines you need to finish the JFK 50 course strong and healthy.
The Race
80.8 km (50.2 mi) from Boonsboro to Williamsport, Maryland. 13 h cutoff with intermediate cutoffs. Three sections: 15.5 miles of rocky, rooty Appalachian Trail (with the Weverton Cliffs descent), 26.3 dead-flat miles on the C&O Canal towpath, then 8.4 miles of rolling country road.
Who It Is For
You have finished a trail 50K, run 4 times a week (about 5 h) and can run 90 min on hilly trails.
Your 20 Weeks
- Phases: Preparation weeks 1-2, Base weeks 3-8, Build weeks 9-12, Specific weeks 13-17, Taper weeks 18-19, race week 20.
- Weekly: 4 runs and 2 strength sessions, about 4.1 h rising to 9.9 h of running.
- Long runs: 1h30 to 5h30, with back-to-back runs up to 2h30.
- Climbing: about 250 m rising to 950 m a week (the course averages 5.6 m per km).
- Race-specific: runnable tempo and cruise intervals, technical trail descending, long flat steady running, back-to-backs, a dress rehearsal.
- Strength: two RunForce 45-min sessions built in the TrainingPeaks Strength Builder (A: Force & Posterior Chain; B: Single-Leg & Mountain Durability), with a demonstration video for every exercise.
Running Power Training

Every run is prescribed as % of your Critical Power, with a CP test in week 1 and retests later. Power guides climbs, threshold and interval work precisely; workouts explain when power is less useful (steep descents, very technical ground). Works with Stryd, COROS and Garmin power.
