Coach Ray’s 4-Week Norwegian-Inspired Running Threshold Builder

Build controlled threshold fitness without double-threshold days or a lactate meter.
This four-week, pace-based running plan is for established recreational runners who want a focused block of threshold development before moving into more race-specific training. It draws on Norwegian training principles: accumulate repeatable work at a controlled intensity, support it with steady aerobic running, and leave enough recovery to train consistently.
Each week has five running days and two rest days. Tuesday features longer sub-threshold intervals; Thursday uses shorter intervals at a similarly controlled effort. A medium-duration steady run on Wednesday, a shorter steady run on Saturday and a longer steady run on Sunday complete the week. Monday and Friday are rest days.
Is this plan right for you?
You should already be comfortable running five days and approximately four to five hours per week, including a regular 60–80-minute long run. Some recent experience with interval or tempo sessions will help. You will also need a recent event result that reflects your current fitness so you can set an appropriate threshold pace. This block is intended to replace your current quality training, rather than be added to it.
How the training works
Your pace targets provide a starting point, but control matters more than forcing a number. The threshold sessions should feel repeatable, with consistent pacing and enough reserve to finish well. Workout notes explain how to execute the sessions, with links to articles containing fuller descriptions.
The plan uses one run per day and does not require double-threshold sessions or lactate testing. Strength training is not included.
Best for: Established runners looking to develop controlled threshold running for future 10 km or half-marathon training. This is a four-week development block, rather than a complete race-preparation plan.
