Calf Strain — Return to Running Plan
Important Disclaimer
This plan is intended as general guidance for returning to running following a calf injury and is not a substitute for individual medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
Calf injuries can vary significantly in type and severity. We recommend having your injury properly assessed by a qualified healthcare professional before beginning this plan, particularly if you have significant pain, swelling or bruising, difficulty walking, recurrent calf injuries, or symptoms that are not improving.
The suggested two-week offload period is a guide, not a fixed return-to-running date. Do not begin running simply because two weeks have passed. You should be able to walk normally and pain-free and complete the suggested return-to-run checks without pain or significant calf awareness before progressing.
Progress through the plan based on how your calf responds, not the calendar. If pain or symptoms increase during a session, afterwards or the following day, stop or reduce your training and seek professional advice where appropriate.
Every injury and athlete is different. If you're unsure at any stage, speak to a physiotherapist, sports doctor or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional before continuing.
