Run Durability, Phase 3: Stack the Gains
Turn a durable base into a genuine engine.
By now the habit is built and every run sits comfortably around 45 minutes. Phase 3 is where you stop simply extending and start adding: layering in extra runs, including easy doubles on some days, and one longer weekend run on top of an already-durable base. This is the peak of the durability mountain, and you finish it on a motivating target, whether that is a big final week, a running streak, or a distance milestone.
Exit this phase and lacing up for a five-mile run is just something you do, not something you think about. You will be ready for the quality training to come, with a foundation so solid it can pay off across two full seasons, not just one.
This is Phase 3 of a 3-part Run Durability set. Each phase is a 4-week block. Run it as the capstone after Phases 1 and 2, or connect all three for a full three months of base before your season's quality training begins.
👋 Hey, I'm Patrick McCrann, head coach at Endurance Nation. I've been coaching endurance athletes for 20+ years, and I race the same stuff you do: 30 Ironman finishes, a Big Buckle at Leadville, 5 BQs and a top 10 at Unbound 200. EN has helped 1000s of age-group athletes get faster with the time they actually have. Whether you're following one of our training plans or working with me directly, the approach is the same: smart structure, no junk miles, and coaching that respects your life.
