Run Durability, Phase 1: Build the Habit
Start your season with consistency, not speed.
Run Durability is the quiet, unglamorous work that makes everything else in your season possible. You build it the way you build a callus: through frequency, not intensity, showing up to run easy and often until lacing up your shoes is just something you do. The athletes who skip this step are the ones who break down when the miles pile up. The athletes who do it run more, get injured less, and carry their speed deeper into the year.
Phase 1 is the on-ramp. You trade the old "a few long runs" habit for more short, easy runs spread across the week, because frequency is the engine of durability. It is built to be easy to start and easy to keep, so you finish the block with the single most valuable thing in endurance training: a running habit that holds.
This is Phase 1 of a 3-part Run Durability set. Each phase is a 4-week block. Run this one on its own, or connect Phases 1, 2, and 3 to build up to 12 weeks of durable base before you begin the quality training that shapes your season.
👋 Hey, I'm Patrick McCrann, head coach at Endurance Nation. I've been coaching endurance athletes for 20+ years, and I race the same stuff you do: 30 Ironman finishes, a Big Buckle at Leadville, 5 BQs and a top 10 at Unbound 200. EN has helped 1000s of age-group athletes get faster with the time they actually have. Whether you're following one of our training plans or working with me directly, the approach is the same: smart structure, no junk miles, and coaching that respects your life.
