8-week base rebuild for experienced marathoners after a healthy race block and 1-2 weeks off: work up to six days a week first, then 6-7+ hours, with strides, hills, aerobic fartleks and a first taste of threshold. By the end, you will be ready for your next race block.
You just finished a good marathon, took your 1-2 easy weeks, and now want to get back to real training without rushing it. This plan rebuilds the same way Coach Trent brings his own marathoners back after a fall race: frequency first (5 runs in week 1, 6 from week 2), then longer runs, and finally a little taste of intensity. Weekly time climbs from about 4.3 to 7.3 hours of running, with a down week in week 4. Strides twice a week from day 1; short hill sprints and a hilly fartlek in weeks 2-4; moderate aerobic fartleks in weeks 5-6; and two short threshold sessions in weeks 7-8. The long run grows from 75 minutes to 2 hours, with one gentle pyramid. Nothing here is marathon- or half-specific: the goal is to arrive at week 1 of your next build healthy, consistent and aerobically strong. Strength 1-2x a week throughout.
