HORIZON RESET: POST-MARATHON RECOVERY
4 Weeks | Heart Rate Based | All Levels
You got to the finish line!!! Now let's get you back to the start line healthy.
A marathon leaves damage you can't always feel: muscle and connective tissue repair, depleted energy stores, and a nervous and immune system that need time to settle. Horizon Reset gives your body that time with a structured, progressive return to running, so your next training block starts from a solid foundation instead of lingering fatigue.
WHO IT'S FOR?
Any runner in the 1–4 weeks after a marathon, whether it was your first or your fifteenth, and whether you raced hard or ran it as a long effort.
HOW IT WORKS
Every run is guided by heart rate as a percentage of your Lactate Threshold Heart Rate (LTHR), not pace. Post-marathon pace is misleading, and heart rate keeps you honest. Before starting, make sure your LTHR is set in your TrainingPeaks zones. Each run's time includes a 5-minute warm-up and 5-minute cool-down.
Week 1 – Rest & Absorb: Rest, walking and an easy spin, with your first short recovery run at the end of the week.
Week 2 – Reconnect: Short easy runs, first strides, and one light, bodyweight-only strength session.
Week 3 – Bridge: Building easy volume, your first longer run back, and two strength sessions.
Week 4 – Ready to Build: Two strength sessions, a gentle steady-finish run, and a long easy run to confirm you're ready for your next block.
THE GOLDEN RULE: RESPECT THE CAP!!
Each run has a heart rate ceiling. If you drift above it, slow down or walk. After a marathon your heart rate may run higher than usual, or stay oddly low and hard to raise. Either way, stick to the cap!
SWAP A RUN FOR REST OR CROSS-TRAINING IF:
- Your resting heart rate is 5+ bpm above your normal
- Your heart rate at easy pace is 5+ bpm above usual
- You feel localized pain (not general soreness)
EXIT CRITERIA: ARE YOU READY TO BUILD?
You're ready to start your next training block when ALL of these are true:
- Resting heart rate is back to your normal baseline
- Heart rate at easy pace is back to your pre-taper normal
- No lingering soreness or niggles
- Your motivation to run is back
Check these at the end of Weeks 3 and 4. If you're ready after Week 3, move straight into your next plan. If you're not ready after Week 4, repeat Week 3 and reach out to your coach (if applicable).
