This program is a 16 week training plan created by Joey Berriatua, to help athletes looking to run under 2:50:00 in their upcoming marathon race. Joey has extensive experience in coaching marathon athletes and helping them reach their goals. Through a calculated plan of gradually working athletes to and then under their goal race pace over the span of 16 weeks has helped multiple of Joey's private athletes run 10+ minute PRs.
Athletes interested in this program should have previous race experience, as well as a general base building fitness going into the training (e.g. easy running 4 or so days a week with some workouts for 3-6 weeks).
Breakdown of the program:
The mileage will increase throughout the 1st 9 weeks of the program. Athletes start on the slower side of paces – the goal is sub 2:50:00, but we'll start off at 3:05:00 marathon pace for your training, and then progressively get faster over the weeks, ending at 2:45:00 paces. This is designed specifically to keep you healthy and consistent early on while we're building mileage – critical training for when we actually start hitting goal paces! Assigned pace ranges will be in a note every Monday as a reference.

Hammer & Axe Training was born out of a vision shared by a handful of elite distance runners. We found in our training that we ran our best when we committed to training our speed and strength equally. A focus on strength made us durable, strong, and prepared for the adversity that racing brings. A focus on speed made us confident, efficient, and ready to move when the right moment arrived. We wanted to bring this feeling of speed and strength to as many runners as possible.
