This training program is designed for experienced marathon runners aged 40-44 who are aiming to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The focus of the plan is to build endurance, incorporate speed work, and potentially improve race times. Participants should have previous marathon experience and be able to dedicate 5 days a week to running.
The training schedule includes long runs, fartleks, tempo runs, track speed workouts, and designated recovery days. Starting with an 11-mile long run and progressing to a 32-mile week in the initial training week, the program peaks at a total weekly mileage of 43 miles with the longest run reaching 22 miles. To be eligible for this training, runners should have a qualifying time that is no more than 25 minutes over the Boston Marathon age qualification standard for the 40-44 age group.
The training plan is specifically tailored based on the individual's Boston Marathon age qualification time.
