Plan Description
This 6-week base strength training program is designed to provide triathletes with a solid strength foundation that supports swim, bike, and run performance while reducing injury risk. The program fits seamlessly into the base phase of triathlon training, prioritising movement quality, control, and progressive overload without compromising endurance sessions.
The program follows a clear and logical progression, starting with an emphasis on technique, stability, and neuromuscular control, and gradually advancing toward strength endurance and foundational strength development. Loads, volume, and exercise complexity are increased progressively across the six weeks, ensuring safe adaptation and long-term benefits.
Training sessions focus on functional, multi-joint movements that replicate the demands of triathlon, such as squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, and rotational control. Special attention is given to single-leg strength and core stability, which are essential for running efficiency, cycling power transfer, and swimming posture.
Throughout the program, core training and postural control play a central role, enhancing trunk stability and helping athletes maintain efficient technique across all three disciplines, especially under fatigue. Exercises are selected to improve balance, coordination, and muscular symmetry, addressing common weaknesses and imbalances in triathletes.
The program is structured to be time-efficient and sustainable, with two weekly sessions that complement aerobic training rather than compete with it. Intensity remains moderate, recovery is respected, and technical execution is prioritised at all times.
Overall, this 6-week base strength program builds a robust physical base, preparing triathletes for more specific, higher-intensity strength or race-focused training phases while promoting durability, efficiency, and long-term athletic development.
