16-week Beginner Century/Gran Fondo Training Plan for Masters Cyclists - Saturday Event
If you’re a Masters cyclist (40+) preparing for a Century or Gran Fondo and new to structured training, this 16-week plan is designed to guide you steadily and confidently to the start line.
The focus is on building fitness gradually, improving endurance, and preparing your body for a long day in the saddle, while respecting the recovery and consistency needs that become increasingly important with age.
Rather than rushing fitness or pushing intensity too early, the plan progresses calmly with regular recovery weeks and a focused 2-week taper to help you arrive fresh, confident, and ready to ride.
Who Is This Plan For?
This plan is ideal for Masters cyclists who already ride regularly but want more structure and direction in their training.
Whether you’re stepping up to your first Century or Gran Fondo, returning to consistent riding, or simply looking for a sensible and sustainable approach to endurance cycling, this plan is built around the realities of training alongside work, family, and everyday life.
You should be comfortable riding for approximately 60–90 minutes and happy riding both indoors and outdoors.
What Does The Plan Focus On?
The training is designed to help you:
🔹 Improve aerobic endurance and long-ride durability
🔹 Build confidence riding longer distances
🔹 Develop pacing and consistency
🔹 Train progressively without burning out
Intensity is introduced gradually and purposefully, with a strong emphasis on repeatable efforts, sensible pacing, and recovery.
What’s Included?
Across the 16 weeks, the plan combines structured indoor sessions with longer outdoor endurance rides to build both fitness and real-world riding resilience.
Recovery weeks are included throughout to help absorb training, reduce fatigue, and support long-term consistency. As the event approaches, training becomes more specific to the demands of long-distance sportive riding before tapering into race day.
The Goal
This plan isn’t about chasing quick gains or exhausting yourself in training. The goal is to arrive at your event fitter, more resilient, and confident in your ability to handle the physical and mental demands of a Century or Gran Fondo, ready to enjoy the experience and complete the challenge well.
